The optics world is ever evolving

As optical systems become increasingly complex and miniaturized, the role of optomechanics becomes significant. Optomechanical components can include housings, barrels, mounts, stages, spacers, retainers, optics bases, optics carriages, optics plates, optics covers, filter wheels, nano-positioning components, and light guide stands. These components are used in a wide range of applications such as – optical sensors, cameras, microscopes, quantum optics, nanophotonics, and laser optics systems.

Wordingham Technologies, a subsidiary of Syntec Technologies Inc. and ITAR registered, provides these precision machined components critical to the function and finished aesthetics of these systems. We routinely work with materials including, but not limited to, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Glass Filled Plastics, Ultem, Teflon-Filled Delrin, Nylon, and Steel Alloys, such as Invar and Kovar, to produce tightly toleranced optomechanics components and assemblies.

Possessing fourth and five-axis cutting capability, Wordingham Technologies provides our clients with the most innovative, high-quality multi-axis milling and turning services for their custom optics applications and products. Wordingham Technologies is well equipped to handle a broad array of machining processes such as – facing, contour turning, threading, broaching, drilling, milling, and tapping. We offer CAD/CAM programming and design review, cellular manufacturing, and print review for new projects to reduce costs. Wordingham Technologies has high-end machines with 7-axis capabilities with up to 12 live tools turning and up to 7 ID work tools to maintain (+/-) .0001. These machine tools have high-tech controls. Full servo-axes and advanced technologies allow for faster machining operations while reducing the non-cutting idle time by 40%. These machine tools demonstrate the versatility and capability to manufacture a variety of complex custom optics and optomechanics parts.

By systematically following and upgrading our proven internal systems, we ensure delivery of “Zero Defect” precision optomechanics components made precisely to customer standards, using the industry’s tightest tolerances. Metrology is critical to our Quality Department, which boasts a portfolio of leading-edge equipment.

Optical Housings

These optomechanical components require a very tight fit between the OD of the cells and the ID of the barrels. The customers often want a fit of .0002-.0005 between the cells and barrels in order to optimize the performance of the finished unit. Our processes work well while maintaining reasonable pricing.

Optics Cam Slots

The manufacturing of custom machined parts like Barrels and Housings is one of the core competencies at Wordingham. We routinely work with materials including, but not limited to, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, and Glass filled plastics to produce tightly toleranced barrels.

Small Lens Housing

Wordingham has developed a custom manufacturing process for custom lens housings in a volume of about 100 parts per year to 2000-4000 parts per year. Cost became a much bigger factor in the higher volumes while maintaining the high quality and tight tolerances required at assembly.

Optics Barrels

Optical Housing & Barrels are the most common method of the assembly when mounting multiple lens assemblies. Wordingham Technologies has spent decades crafting precision housing and barrel components for various sub-assembly needs. Our teams work with a professional, forward-thinking approach.

Fish Eye Barrel

Being a leader in custom optics manufacturing, Wordingham works closely with our customers during the design stage to help simplify manufacturability, hold tight tolerances, and offer suggestions for reducing costs. Wordingham maintains tight size tolerances as well as rigid GD&T dimensions.

Ultem Optics Barrel

Wordingham custom manufactures barrel made out of 20% glass filled Ultem. There were two distinct challenges. The first challenge was the abrasive nature of the material. The second challenge was holding the tight tolerance requirements in plastic at production volumes.

Retainers and Spacers

Many Optical Systems require barrels, spacers, and retainers for assembly. Here at Wordingham, we specialize in custom barrels, spacers, and retainers. We take pride in our knowledge of custom thread fits and have the personnel and machines necessary to produce highly toleranced quality parts at a reasonable price.

Large Optical Retainer

In order to run 20% glass filled Ultem retainer at high production volume and low pricing, we have to overcome the usual challenges that this material presents as well as figure out a new and different way to run this in a lower cost manner. The part was larger than the standard retainers we run unattended.

Ultem Optical Retainer

An optomechanical assembly consists of mechanical components like retainers, that are critical to holding the constituent components together. Wordingham makes retainer made out of 20% glass filled Ultem. We have very aggressive target pricing for these in production volumes.

Mounts and Stages

The manufacturing of Mounts & Stages often involves milling of complex geometrical features that are tightly toleranced. Here at Wordingham, we have the people and machines to produce these parts to your specifications. We can run anything from low volume to high volume production competitively.

Optics Base

At SyntecOptics.com, decades of experience in precision manufacturing has transpired into our expertise in manufacturing of tightly toleranced opto mechanical components like optical bases.

Optics Carriage

Wordingham has developed custom manufacturing processes for Teflon filled Delrin material that is quite expensive. The part we make are very tightly toleranced, both for size and for GD&T callouts. Since the material is quite expensive, we need to minimize scrap parts to keep pricing in line with customer expectations.

Optics Plates and Covers

The manufacturing of Mounts & Stages often involves milling of complex geometrical features that are tightly toleranced. Wordingham possesses the people, machines, and processes to produce these parts to your specifications.

Plate & Cover Assembly

These parts are often custom machined as two separate parts, then assembled and machined further as a matched set. The plating can vary to a black nickel over electroless nickel, which is difficult to achieve as far as the cosmetics needed on these large parts. Our process worked and was controllable and repeatable.

Optics Plate

The customer for such part typically will place a fairly large blanket order with scheduled monthly deliveries. They would prefer that not all the optomechanical components are made at once in case they want to make slight revisions, but they want to keep the volume pricing if possible.

Asphere Barrels

Possessing many impressive five-axis machining centers with live tooling capability, high pressure through coolant tooling, temperature-controlled coolant capability, and advanced magazine bar feeders, our premium turning machine tools can maintain a tight precision tolerance of .0001 of an inch.

Micro-Laser Barrels

The headliner L-720 equipped with 7-axis capabilities with up to 12 live tools turning and up to 7 ID work tools, can maintain (+/-) .0001. This machine tool is equipped with the powerful Mitsubishi 700 Control. Full servo axes and advanced technologies enable faster machining operations while reducing idle time by 40%.

Thermal Block Test Plate

Offering top-quality machining services, Wordingham Technologies manufactures critical-to-function custom optics components used within the medical industry. With a strong reputation for producing precision instrumentation, we were contacted by a client located in Germany to construct a thermal block test plate.

Aluminum Filter Wheel

Using our custom machining capabilities and experience, Wordingham Technologies uses CNC milling to manufacture an aluminum filter wheel for a customer in the optics industry. Our MORI Seiki DCG Vertical Mill is used for the CNC milling of the filter wheel itself, as well as for a stainless steel bushing used with the filter wheel.

Light Guide Stand

Light guide stands used in the semiconductor industry, are basic stands, with manual adjustments, based on customer-provided 2D CAD drawings. Using aluminum and Post-303 stainless steel, our fabrication process includes CNC turning, milling, engraving, anodizing, and then assembling all the parts.

Nanopositioning Isolator

Wordingham Technologies uses CNC turning to manufacture nanopositioning isolator mechanical assembly which is used within leveling test equipment. Each of the four components, a post support leg, post support plug, height adjustment nut, and height adjustment post, is machined, via CNC turning.

Fisheye Housing Assembly

Wordingham manufactured a four-component fisheye housing assembly used in a projection application. Using CNC turning on a 6061-T6 aluminum base material, pieces of varying diameter and thread are manufactured. The outside diameter of the largest piece measures 6.313″ across, and thread size.

Swiss Screw Machining

With a long history of providing top quality custom mechanical components for the optics industry, Wordingham Technologies was contacted by a client in the northeast to produce an optical lens holder. This part was machined from 6061 aluminum, using advanced Citizen L720 Swiss turning center.
