In traditional optical systems, lens elements are moved mechanically against each other to focus or zoom, i.e. to change the focal length. However, the Optotune tunable lens design is inspired from human eye. The tunable lenses are a combination of optical fluids and a polymer membrane (elastic lens material). Instead of moving the lens elements in a lens system, the membrane shape is changed to adjust focal length. These lens systems can be miniaturized relatively easily.
