In medical diagnostic applications, microfluidics (control and manipulation of the samples) and optics (sensing) technology are used in combination. Lab-on-a-chip researchers embed optical devices into microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to improve the functionality of their devices. Microfluidic optical devices (MOD) combine microfluidics technology with optics. However, MODs integrate these two technologies rather than combining them. This integration provides a new approach to microfluidics applications.
