According to recent research, an artificial intelligence tool has successfully identified those at the greatest risk for pancreatic cancer up to three years before diagnosis.
The researchers said the results indicate that AI-based population screening could be useful in identifying those at increased risk for the disease and could hasten the diagnosis of a disorder frequently discovered at advanced stages when treatment is less effective and outcomes are poor. One of the worst tumors in the world, pancreatic cancer, is expected to claim more lives in the future.
There are currently no population-based techniques available for widespread pancreatic cancer screening. Targeted screening identifies those at risk for pancreatic cancer due to family history and genetic abnormalities. However, the researchers noted that such focused screens could only cover cases that fit those descriptions.
Who is at high risk for disease and who might benefit from additional testing, which can also mean more intrusive and expensive procedures that have their dangers, is one of the most crucial decisions clinicians have to make every day, according to the study’s lead investigator. Clinical decision-making could be greatly aided by an AI tool focusing on the most at-risk for pancreatic cancer and would benefit from additional testing.
Large-scale use of this strategy could speed up pancreatic cancer identification, resulting in early treatment, enhanced results, and lengthened patient lives.
